Mid-Year Checkup: Is Your Giving Aligned with What Matters Most?

As we reach the halfway point of the year, many of us take stock of where we stand. We review our goals, assess our priorities, and think about what we'd still like to accomplish before the year is over.

But how often do we pause to reflect on our giving?

Not necessarily how much we've given, but whether our generosity reflects what matters most to us.

Giving takes many forms. It may look like supporting a local nonprofit, volunteering your time, helping a neighbor, serving on a board, mentoring a young person, or contributing to a cause close to your heart. Each act of generosity tells a story about what we value and the kind of community we hope to build.

Yet in the busyness of everyday life, it's easy for our giving to become reactive rather than intentional.

The middle of the year offers a valuable opportunity to step back and ask: Are my actions aligned with the impact I hope to make?

What Causes Matter Most to You?

For some people, it's education. For others, it's healthcare, childcare, faith-based organizations, community development, youth programs, agriculture, the arts, or preserving the quality of life in the communities they call home.

The causes we support often reveal what we care about most deeply. They reflect our experiences, our values, and our hopes for the future.

Taking time to identify those priorities can help ensure our generosity- whether through giving, volunteering, or advocacy- is creating the kind of impact we truly care about.

Are You Giving with Intention?

Many of us spend time planning for our families, our businesses, our farms, and our futures. Yet we don't always spend the same amount of time thinking about our charitable goals.

Intentional giving isn't necessarily about giving more. It's about making thoughtful decisions that align with your values and priorities.

When your giving reflects what matters most to you, it becomes more meaningful; for you, your family, and the community.

Thinking Beyond Today

One of the most meaningful questions we can ask ourselves is:

What impact do I hope to have long after I'm gone?

One of the most rewarding parts of our work is helping people discover that they don't have to be wealthy to make a lasting difference. Often, the conversation begins with a simple question: What matters most to you? From there, we can help people explore ways to support the causes and communities they care about, both today and for generations to come." -Julia Rabe, Executive Direcotr, SVCF

Legacy is often associated with wealth, but in reality, legacy is about values.

It's about the lessons we pass on. The causes we champion. The opportunities we create for others. The communities we help strengthen.

Every family has values worth preserving. Every person can leave a positive mark on the future.

Jerry and Barbara Boettcher understood the importance of protecting places and stories that help define a community. Jerry's family was instrumental in moving and restoring the Little Red Schoolhouse, and he remained passionate about ensuring the historic landmark would be preserved for generations to come. Through a designated fund at SVCF, that commitment continues today, helping maintain and protect an important symbol of early education and community heritage.

The size of the gift is not what makes a legacy meaningful. What matters is identifying something you care deeply about and taking steps to ensure it continues to have an impact long into the future.

When we begin with the question, "What matters most to you?" we shift the conversation away from dollars and toward purpose. That's where meaningful giving begins, and where lasting legacies are built.

A Resource for Thoughtful Giving

At Solomon Valley Community Foundation, we believe charitable giving should be as personal as the values that inspire it.

That's why we work alongside individuals, families, professional advisors, and nonprofits to help people explore ways to support the causes they care about- both today and for generations to come.

Whether you're evaluating your charitable goals, considering ways to create a lasting impact, or simply looking for a trusted resource to help guide the conversation, we're here to help.

As you reflect on the year so far, consider this:

If your generosity tells the story of what matters most to you, what story is it telling?

And perhaps more importantly:

What will your legacy be?
