SVCF Awards $25,000 Grant to Help Expand Childcare Opportunities in Mitchell County
Access to quality childcare is one of the most important and increasingly urgent needs facing rural communities today. In Mitchell County, local leaders, families, and employers have all felt the effects of limited childcare options.
That’s why the Solomon Valley Community Foundation recently awarded a $25,000 grant to support the development of the Kingdom Kids Childcare Center, a new facility planned in Beloit that aims to significantly expand childcare availability in the community.
For the Community Foundation, supporting this initiative aligns directly with its mission to strengthen communities across Mitchell County by investing in projects that improve quality of life and support long-term community vitality.
“Access to reliable childcare is one of the most important investments a community can make in its future,” said Curt Fraiser, Board President of the Solomon Valley Community Foundation. “While our grant represents only a portion of the overall project, we’re proud to support a community-driven effort that will have a lasting impact on Mitchell County families.”
A Community Need with Wide-Reaching Impact
Childcare is often thought of as a family issue, but in reality, it affects nearly every aspect of a community.
When families cannot find reliable childcare, parents may be forced to reduce work hours, leave the workforce, or even relocate to other communities with better options. Local businesses struggle to recruit employees, schools experience declining enrollment, and communities lose opportunities for growth.
Across Kansas, many communities are experiencing a significant shortage of childcare providers and available slots for children, particularly in rural areas. Mitchell County is no exception.
The Kingdom Kids Childcare Center project is designed to help address that shortage by creating a new licensed childcare facility capable of serving up to 71 children when fully staffed.
The center is planned for two lots just west of Beloit First Christian Church, at the corner of 4th and Bell Street, with the goal of serving infants through school-age children.
A Grassroots Vision for the Community
The vision for Kingdom Kids began in the fall of 2022, when members of Beloit First Christian Church and the broader community began discussing the need for additional childcare options in Mitchell County.
An exploratory team was formed shortly afterward to study the issue. Over the next several years, the group gathered data, visited other childcare centers, evaluated different models, and ultimately developed the plan now moving forward.
Their proposal includes a new purpose-built childcare facility designed to meet Kansas Department of Health and Environment licensing standards while providing a safe, nurturing environment for children and families.
The project is currently supported by a $2.7 million capital campaign, which includes construction costs as well as initial operating reserves for the first six months of operation. If fundraising progresses as planned, organizers hope to break ground by late 2026 or early 2027, with the goal of opening the center in fall 2027.
The Role of Community Partnerships
Large community projects rarely happen through the efforts of a single organization alone. Instead, they take shape through partnerships between volunteers, donors, businesses, nonprofits, and organizations working together toward a shared goal.
Community foundations play an important role in that process, connecting charitable giving with projects that strengthen the places people call home.
While the foundation’s $25,000 grant represents only a small portion of the overall campaign, it helps build momentum and demonstrates community confidence in the project as fundraising continues.
By supporting initiatives like Kingdom Kids, the Solomon Valley Community Foundation hopes to encourage additional partnerships and investment from individuals, businesses, and organizations who care about the future of Mitchell County.

Investing in the Next Generation
Childcare solutions are not quick fixes. They require vision, commitment, and collaboration.
Projects like Kingdom Kids demonstrate what can happen when community members come together to address a challenge head-on, not just for today, but for the future.
For families who need reliable childcare.
For employers seeking a stable workforce.
And for communities working to remain vibrant places to live and raise a family.
The Solomon Valley Community Foundation is proud to support efforts like this, investing in ideas that strengthen communities and help create opportunities for the next generation growing up in Mitchell County.
